Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 is the second game in the Command & Conquer series, released on October 31, 1999. The game takes place in an alternate universe where Joseph Stalin has survived World War II and continues to rule the Soviet Union, starting World War III with his allies, China and North Korea.The game's backstory entails an accidental time travel experiment gone wrong for both Allied Forces and Soviet Forces scientists. It begins on July 4th 1990 when Albert Einstein dies unexpectedly of old age-related causes which leads to a war between US forces from present day against those from Germany from 1946 preventing them from being captured by Soviet troops present at Berlin... Players can choose to play as either the Soviet Union or United States in this game. There are multiple playable factions which will be unlocked by gaining enough victories. Each faction has their own map selection screens in which they can choose to play any of the various maps they've unlocked. Games are played based within the three main campaigns presented in the game's single-player campaign, each with their own unique ending sequences for each side upon winning their respective campaigns, one for Allied Forces and two for the Soviets respectively. Each campaign contains a variety of missions. Each mission requires the player to complete a mission objective in order for them to achieve victory. The objectives vary from simply destroying the enemy base to rescuing prisoners from an enemy base or from outside of battles altogether, defending bases that are being attacked, capturing certain territory and destroying certain advanced prototypes. In addition to the main story mode, players can also play multiplayer matches against other players online through LAN network connections or over the internet. The game has multiple multiplayer modes including Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch. There is also a single-player challenge mode which contain various levels, puzzles and mini-games which will test a player's knowledge of the game's commands and strategy tactics. The game also contains a skirmish mode through which players can play against the computer or other player(s) in an open-ended battle free of any restrictions on unit construction. Lastly, the game has a map editor for users to create their own custom scenarios and maps for conventional and multiplayer matches.The two factions that players will assume command over are:Stalin's Russia: The Soviets will often use tactics such as rush tactics and brute force to overwhelm opponents, especially early on in the campaign. This is evident through the use of tanks and heavy units as well as mind control units which allow the Soviet Commander to take control of enemy units for a short amount of time. The Soviets can also summon a nuclear missile strike on the enemy base which will severely damage the structures within the vicinity of the explosion, forcing them to either be rebuilt or destroyed. The Allies are equipped with more technologically advanced weaponry compared to the Soviets. However, these weapons are extremely expensive and require high amounts of power in order for them to operate. Their main advantage is that they can build their structures anywhere on the battlefield whether it be on water or even on cliffs. They also use more stealth-oriented tactics compared to the Soviets.The game received "generally favorable reviews" according to video game review aggregator Metacritic.
